Disability Driving Tests & Instruction

For those 18 years and older with a disability, Driver Rehab Solutions offers disability driving tests, recommendations, driving instruction, and more. These disability driving instructors are therapists who are also certified driver rehabilitation specialists (CDRS).

Who Might Benefit From a Disability Driving Test?

Many people with physical or cognitive disabilities (differently abled) may benefit from a disability driving test.  Some of these include:

  • People born with spina bifida, missing limbs, cerebral palsy, or similar conditions
  • Anyone who has had an amputation of a leg, foot, hand, or arm
  • People who have had strokes or other types of brain injuries
  • Individuals with spinal cord injuries

This list is not limited. Other people with physical or problem-solving challenges may also benefit from a disability driving test.

Disability Driving Tests Have Two Parts

For people with disabilities who may need new skills or adaptations to drive, we begin with a two-part evaluation.

Part 1: The Clinical Evaluation

The clinical evaluation is the first part of the disability driving test. In plain English, we look at your:

  • Eyesight
  • Interpretations and insights
  • Thinking skills, thought processes, and judgment
  • Ability to move with certainty

From this evaluation, we’re able to make recommendations designed to maximize your independence AND safe driving—if possible.

Part 2: The Behind-the-Wheel Driving Evaluation

The second part of the disability driving test is the behind-the-wheel evaluation. Important, we provide the vehicle you’ll use for the test.

That’s because, our testing vehicles can be modified with special adaptive driving equipment that can often help people with disabilities drive safely. Among other vehicle modifications, these might include:

  • Hand controls
  • Left foot controls
  • Steering knobs
  • Special mirrors
  • Other tools or adaptive devices

As experts in this area of adaptive devices, Drivers Rehab Solutions therapists will recommend what’s appropriate.  What’s more, we’ll also give you the chance to try different types of equipment.

When the behind-the-wheel part of the disability driving test is over, we’ll write a report with our recommendations. This report and recommendations will be based on both parts of the driving evaluation. Furthermore, we’ll send this report to your doctor.

“At the end of the day, one of the best parts of our job is being able to give you your freedom.”

What Happens After the Disability Driving Test?

After the disability driving evaluation, there are four steps to freedom for people with disabilities. These steps occur if the CDRS recommends driving with adaptive devices.

  1. Driving Instruction
  2. Letter to an Authorized Mobility Dealer
  3. Final Fitting and Inspection
  4. Your New License
  5. Sharing Your Success (and one extra step!)

STEP 1 Driving Instruction

If our assessment reveals that you CAN drive safely in a modified vehicle, Driver Rehab Solutions will provide instruction and training in one of our specially modified vehicles.

You can expect four or more hours of supervised, behind-the-wheel training in real-life driving situations.

As a result, we’ll help you feel comfortable and safe while driving in this new way.

Step 2 Letter to an Authorized Mobility Dealer

When you’re ready to drive independently, our CDRS will send a letter to an authorized mobility dealer. This letter lists the equipment that you used during your training. We’ll specify that the authorized mobility dealer install the same type of equipment in your vehicle.

Step 3 Final Fitting and Inspection

After all training is complete and your vehicle is ready, we’ll meet you at the mobility dealer. We’ll make sure the equipment fits you properly (final fitting). And we’ll inspect it for your safety. At this point, we’ll provide your final training. This training will take place in your newly modified vehicle.

Step 4 Your New Special License

After your final fitting, inspection, and lesson our CDRS will send a report to your state. This report includes a copy of your evaluation and training. Furthermore, it will list the equipment the authorized mobility dealer put in your car.

After several weeks, you’ll receive a special letter. In Tennessee, this letter will come from the Tennessee Department of Safety & Homeland Security.

You will need to take this letter to your local Driver Services Division, i.e., department of motor vehicles (DMV). There, the examiner will give you a driver’s test.  When you pass, the state will “endorse” your license.

In other words, your state driver’s license will show that you can safely drive a vehicle that has adaptive equipment. This is just like having a box checked that reads that you can drive with eye glasses.

Step 5 Sharing Your Success

Finally, contact us, so we can celebrate your success. Our CDRS’s delight in helping people gain the keys to their freedom. Let us know you got your wings.

We wish you safe travels.
